Wayfinding as Community Storytelling

Interpretive Signs Are a Way for Communities to Share Their Values and Heritage

Often when a town considers replacing or creating new signage in their community, a primary focus is on a new gateway, or "welcome to" sign, or directionals with arrows pointing to parking areas, city hall, restrooms, parks, and more. Those are vitally needed to help visitors find their way around.

However, signage serves a much broader purpose.

Beyond helping people navigate, signage is also useful as a way to share historical stories, safety concerns, geological information, natural resources, and wildlife in the area. It can communicate stewardship and, perhaps most importantly, what the community values.
